Of all of Kiribati, Fanning (otherwise known as Tabuaeran) Island, is the pick with almost year round consistent swell. Fanning has breaks on the North and South, making the most of both Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemispher swells. The two most consistent breaks are 'English Harbour' in the South with strong and consistent March to June; while 'Walers Anchorage'' in the North has strong and conisistent swell from October to March, and even picks up some southern swell.

Getting There

There is a reason Fanning has no crowds on world class waves - it can be a little tricky to get to. Currently the best option is Sailing Vessel Kwai (http://www.svkwai.com/), which takes a limited number of passengers. This vessel sails from Honolulu, Hawaii, and will drop you at Fanning while it completes it voyge - and then pick you up on the way back (around a 1 month layover).

Also: Toward the end of 2009 the Government of Kiribati is expected to announce flight services into Kiritimati - this will open up the option of flying into Kiritimati, and then getting charter boat to Fanning. Stay tuned for this option!
