| Surfing Kiritimati (Christmas) Island |
|
Kiritimati is host to a golden five kilometer stretch of points, reefs and channels between London village and Paris point. This stretch is reputed to have 24 surfable waves - with surf season October through to March. The swell hits Kiritimati about a day or two after it hits Hawaii - a 8' to 12' swell at Sunset Beach in Hawaii will result in 6' to 10' clean faces in Kiritimati one to two days later. Of the 24 breaks, two third are user friendly with deep channels and sand of soft reef bottom. The other third is has rough coral bottoms and are for experienced surfers only.
Getting to KiritimatiKiritimati (Christmas) Island can be accessed by an interim weekly charter service (see getting here...), however you need to check with the air service so see if surfboards will fit onto the aircraft. Also note that toward the end of 2009 the Government of Kiribati is expected to announce flight services into Kiritimati - stay tuned!
Currently the best option for getting to the surf is Sailing Vessel Kwai (http://www.svkwai.com), which takes a limited number of passengers. This vessel sails from Honolulu, Hawaii, and will drop you at Kiritimati while it completes it's voyage - and then pick you up on the way back (around a 1 month layover).
