| Nonouti Island Profile |
|
History: It is the first island in Kiribati to have the Roman Cathol- ic church established in 1888 and the only island as well to have a large traditional meeting house. With the many islets and flats with less human intervention, Nonouti Island has excellent breeding grounds for marine resources. This also gives Nonouti the excess number of bonefish compared to other Gilbert Islands and in January 2010, Nonouti Island has been declared as another bone fishing game destination in the country in addition to Kiritimati Island in the Line Group. Nonouti has developed a fisheries management plan to ensure the sustainability of this resource.
