History: An island with a unique welcoming style to first time travelers to the island where they have to go around the island in an anti-clockwise manner. This is known as Te Katabwanin. The island also encircles a deep blue lagoon. The crews of Hernando de Grijalva’s vessel from San Juan were the first discoverers of Marakei in 1857. Later some white traders resided on the island. Labor traders also sighted the island and recruited some islanders to work as laborers in Guatemala.
