| Makin Island Profile |
|
History: The first island from the farthest north end of Kiribati and most famous for its history as the place where the Spirits of the Dead people from around Kiribati are awaiting judgment day by Nakaa. For a while, the island has been a stopping point for some Marshallese ladies who flew over from Marshal Island with seeds of breadfruit trees wrapped in their pads and hid in their underwear. Seeds were sprinkled once they arrived at their landing point, Buariki, and grove of breadfruit trees can still be seen nowadays at this landing point. Being situated adjacent to Butaritari Island, Makin was also occupied by the Japanese and the Americans during WWII.
